Wax resist and watercolors

Hey there!

I posted the previous tutorial and the response was far beyond my expectations! Thank you everyone who visited, commented and messaged me. I’m really grateful!

So I came up with another tutorial. At this time I am going slow and easy to make you comfortable with this medium. I am trying to use just a couple or so paints and just the basic supplies.

So, let’s start with another tutorial. This one is surprisingly easy and fun to do, and NO.. it’s not only for kids… I have made a lot of paintings using this technique and the best part about this is that the resist is invisible until you paint on it.. so you don’t really know how it will turn out. 🙂

Okay, let’s begin…

Step 1

The things you will need for this painting are

1. A quarter sheet of watercolor paper

2. Masking tape

3. Orange and Yellow watercolor paints

4. A large round brush. (I used a number 12)

5. Clean water for rinsing brushes

6. Salt and

7. White oil pastel or crayon.

b2.1

and that’s it! 😀

Step 2

Tape your watercolor paper onto a hard surface and tape all four sides.

b2.3

Step 3

All set?

Now draw on the paper with the white oil pastel. Don’t worry, it doesn’t need to be perfect. Let go of the feeling of perfection and have fun!

Here is my drawing, I tried to capture the sheen as much as I could. 🙂

Keep drawing until you’re happy with it.

b2.6

Step 4

Let us now open up the surprise gift 🙂 …

Take out the paints on the palette and dilute them with water.

Start painting parts of the paper with orange and the other parts with yellow and let them mix.

     b2.4

The oil pastel will resist the paint and that’s the magic of it! Let the painting unfold in front of your eyes!

Step 5

While the painting is still wet, sprinkle a pinch of salt over the wet paint.

The salt will absorb the water and form beautiful blooms.

Let the painting dry completely.

b2.5

When the painting is dry, brush away the remaining salt and remove the tape.

Ta da!

Here’s how mine looks in two different color schemes. The other one was done using viridian and pthalo blue.

Try different designs and different colors.

b2.2

I hope you had fun…

I’ll be back with another tutorial next week. Insha Allah!

Till then

Have a colorful day!

Watercolor bookmark tutorial

Hey there!

So today I have a surprise for you, and this is something new for me too. 🙂

I have been requested repeatedly for tutorials and classes and workshops, and while workshops and classes are not possible at the moment, I thought of preparing a little tutorial for you. I hope you enjoy.

I shall be waiting for your feedback on this one. 🙂

So, a few days ago, I made watercolor bookmarks with left over pieces of paper and a paint marker that I found while cleaning my cabinet. I decided to play with it and the results were pretty cute. 😀 A lot of people asked me about it, so I decided to make a tutorial for these bookmarks.

So, let’s begin!

First things first… here are the things you’ll need.

1

  1. Watercolor paper. I cut mine to a size of 2.25 x 6.50 inches.
  2. Masking tape.
  3. paper cutter
  4. A big round brush
  5. blue and magenta watercolors
  6. white paint marker.

And that’s it! 😀

Now let’s get to the fun part !!

Step 1

Start of by cutting the paper to your desired size. Mine was 2.25 x 6.50 inches. Use a paper cutter to get sharp clean edges.

Tape your paper onto a board or a surface that you are painting on. This might get a bit messy, so make sure your work space can handle that.

Taping the paper also helps create a neat edge to your bookmarks.

2

Step 2

Now, using a larger brush (I used a no.10) wet the whole paper using clear water. The paper should NOT have puddles of water, just a gloss on it to help the paint move around.

Once the paper is wet, put some magenta color splotches on the paper. It’s totally up to you, where you want the paint to go. Watch the color spread on the paper.

3

Step 3

Once you have applied the magenta paint, apply the blue paint on to the left over white area. Make sure there is no white space left.

The blue and magenta will mix to make beautiful purple color.

4

Step 4

When you are happy with the colors, let it dry completely.

5

Step 5

Start doodling on the paper using your white paint marker. Let your imagination go wild!

6

I think I am quite happy with my doodling. So I’ll stop here.

7

Step 6

Now comes the best part…!

Carefully remove the tape, making sure the paper doesn’t tear.

8

Step 7

Be proud of your bookmark! 😀

Here’s how mine looks… I would love to see yours!

9

I made a couple more. Here’s a pic of the whole family.

Here’s a little tip for you… Use dark colors. It will make the white marker show better.

10

Hope you had fun!

Have a colorful day.

Gate fold card 2

Hey there!

Salam!

My life is on a full force roller coaster, as if it didn’t have enough adventures already! I spent the last night trying to fit in all our belongings in all the suitcases and cartons I could find at home, while my hubby was throwing up all around the place. Poor soul is severely under the weather.. then we rushed to the E.R and after an hour or so of check ups and medicines, we came back home. I hope he gets better soon. 😦

So, coming back to the crafty life of mine… this card is from my previous makes, and the status of this card is – SOLD. 🙂

I love my DCWV scrap book paper and this floral series is one of my favorites. So, I made another gate fold card, which turned out surprisingly pretty.

Here is how it looks 🙂 .. I hope you like it.

2017-02-17_20.25.15

So, I added handmade paper flowers that I punched out. Added sequins for the center of the flowers. A touch of glitter is a must … hehehe, and the yellow ribbon to hold the flaps in place was the finishing touch. 🙂

What do you think?

I’ll be back with a few more intresting makes… so stay tuned.

Till then,

Have an awesome day!

Spring wreath

Hey there!

Happy Monday to you all…

I’ve been under the weather for a couple of days. Travelling does exhaust me…  I’m still unwell but I had to log in to show you this spring wreath I made.

I used crepe paper to cover up the wreath and touched it up with a dusty pink ribbon.

The flowers are all handmade along with the buds and leaves… I added a die cut butterfly and that was it. 🙂

2017-02-13_16.51.53

Here is a closer look at the flowers…

2017-02-13_16.56.02

The shading on the flowers was done by chalk pastels.

This is by far the quickest wreath I have ever made…. 😀 and I actually like it a lot!

There is still a lot more that I have to share with you…

So do check by soon…

Till then,

Have a beautiful day

Mother’s day card..

Salam y’all!

Here is another card that I have to show you today. It is one of the easiest yet very elegant folds, the gate-fold.

I enjoyed making this one because it was easy and quick to make and it can accomodate loads and loads of variations. 🙂

I made this particular card for mother’s day. It is spring time too so combined the two and came up with this beauty!

Card in a box… :)

Hey there!

Salam!

As promised, I am back with another fun creation. Last year I did simple fold cards, but this time I wanted some oomph factor to the cards I made.

One thing that I just can’t get the hang of are the measurements…. like 3 3/4 , 5 1/8 , 7 7/8…! I like things to be a bit easier, so I go with halves and quarters… that’s easy right?

This is exactly what I did with this card of mine… the flaps are 2.5″ x 5″. Sooooo easy!

2017-02-17_20.32.58

So, the card folds flat, which makes it easier to mail. It has plenty of writing space, and is just plain awesome!

I will be putting up a tutorial for this one… pretty soon.. 🙂

Till then,

Have a lovely day !

Mother’s day canvas

Hey there!

It has been some time since I last blogged. Things have been and still are crazily crazy here. I have been having back to back events and to tell you the truth, it can result in a serious burnout!

I decided to take march off and take things a bit slow. So, no events for this month, only commission based work.

Today I have for you this canvas that I made for mother’s day. I did the background in peach and painted “Mom” in metallic. The border was stenciled and a glittery heart stuck at the side… Ta da!

2017-02-21_15.04.47

There is so much more to be shared with you. So do come back soon. Posts will be up regularly… insha Allah.

Till then,

Have an awesome day!

Going red…

Hey there!

As promised, I am back with another make that I really like and thought of sharing it with you.

Valentine’s is just around the corner and all I can see is the color red everywhere. I made quite a few lovey dovey things, and this canvas is one of them!

2017-01-12_12-17-54

Done in acrylics with paper embellishments… this one is getting all the attention. 🙂

Will be putting this beauty up in the next craft fair.

Loads more to come… stay tuned.

Till then

Take care and have a lovely day.

Pillow favor boxes…

Hey there!…

It’s been ages since I last blogged. It has been crazy hectic for me since I came back from holidays. I have 2 exhibitions lined up for this month and it looks like as if a hurricane hit my craft room.

Birthdays, anniversaries and so many other occasions are also coming up and on top of that… orders! (not to mention house work, outdoor work etc etc)

So, today I thought of making it a priority to sit down and blog…no matter what…and here I am!

Recently, among so many other things… I have been working on favor boxes, and these pillow boxes seem to be a favorite!

Here is a birth announcement favor box for a lovely little baby girl.

16228559_1716697258621659_3469942801863540736_n

I used my pram die cut for this one. I adore the softness of this one. The baby boy is in powder blue…another soft color I just looovvee!

This favor box that I have below is for a bridal shower. Bright colors were the demand. I embossed this one to give it a luxury look.

What do you think ?

I have so much lined up to show you… I just hope I don’t get off the track again.

Till then..

Have a bright and colorful day!
